My Top 3 Experiences as an NYP DMMM student!

Hi—for those of you who are confused, DMMM stands for Diploma in Mass Media Management where Business meets Media! Anyhow, I recently finished school and have been meaning to share my top 3 experience in this course. Let’s dive into it!!

  1. Having digital journalism as one of my modules

Undoubtedly, my love for writing persists, even though I’m uncertain about possessing a natural flair for it. But hey, who really cares? I wholeheartedly enjoyed this module back when I was a Year 1 student. I was part of a group with three other enthusiastic students, creating a fun dynamic. The experience pushed us out of our comfort zones, involving interviews with open-minded individuals for compelling feature articles. Additionally, we had the chance to develop a website to showcase our work. While I wouldn’t describe the website as mind-blowingly designed, I believe we did a good enough job, considering the tight timeframe and numerous other projects we were juggling at that time.

The most significant insight I gained from this experience came from the interviews the team and I conducted. I vividly recall serving as the note-taker during one of my team member’s interviews with an individual seated guy that was enjoying the light shows. Throughout the conversation, he passionately shared his views on the arts scene in Singapore, expressing the sentiment that it may not be widely recognised, yet acknowledging the increased efforts compared to the past. His openness and explorative mindset were truly inspiring, making it clear that even a brief interview could reveal someone’s profound perspectives. This had prompted me a question—would I enjoy being in the journalism industry? I think I would, depending on the company.

2. My first assessment for presenting TV & Radio

Teaming up with Mannatt for this project was so exciting. I was over the moon when we received the brief for the assessment – hosting a gala event with a specific theme. Similarly, Mannatt and I have our shared passion for classic old music, particularly the tunes of the 60s-90s. We then eagerly decided to center our gala around this theme. The scripting process turned out to be incredibly enjoyable, as we included them with playful puns and even indulged in singing some iconic hits from the 80s, including “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough” and “Play That Funky Music.”

As they say, good energy translates into good opportunities, and our chemistry proved to be fantastic. The result? A well-deserved and happy A for our project. This experience was not only fun but is also somewhat ingrained into my memory as something truly enjoyable.

3. Two days of Asian Academy Creative Awards

I had the chance to participate in one of our school’s industry projects, where a group of my classmates and I contributed to what is known as AACA, an acronym for the Prestigious Creative Excellence award. For those unfamiliar with this accolade, you can find more information about the annual award show celebrating creative excellence here.

Initially, I was not needed for this as I had completed other industry projects however, one of my classmates could not make it and so I was then asked to join. I have no regrets though it was a little confusing for me at first. I attended one rehearsal with my classmates, in which we were given a brief on what was up and about.

We had two awesome supervisors with us during this busy event. Despite the chaos, they were helpful and amazing. On D-day, I got to help coordinate the Red Carpet event with the Director, Floor Manager, and my supervisor, Andy. We all had different roles such as Assistant Floor Manager, Talent Coordinators, and Teleprompter operators. On top of that, we had to do some last-minute tasks like shopping, paperwork, and cue cards. It was important to have team effort to ensure everything went smoothly during the event.

I met many artists—Tu Tontawan, Manila Luzon, Sonia Chew, Joakim Gomez and many more.

With Joakim and Sonia.

While my time in this Diploma had been pretty stressful, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else, REALLY!!
